8.1.3.2 Questionnaire Design, Amendment, and Survey

The questionnaire is divided into three parts. The first part mainly investigates the basic characteristics of farmers, including individual characteristics, family characteristics, project characteristics, and community characteristics. The second part focuses on farmers’ willingness to receive ecological compensation and the amount of compensation required for the use of grazing land. The researchers use open-ended questions to ask farmers directly about the amount they want to be paid, which can effectively compensate for the psychological anchoring effect that payment cards or dichotomous questionnaires may induce in farmers, thus increasing the credibility of the results (Tang et al., 2014). The third part involves the opportunity cost of changing the use of grazing land, which mainly concerns the reduction in the number of grazing animals and in grazing income.

The survey was conducted by a combination of a questionnaire and in-depth case interviews, and the questionnaire was administered on a randomly sampled basis. To ensure the validity of the questionnaire, several pilot surveys were conducted before the formal survey was carried out, and the questionnaire was amended according to the result of the pilot survey. Moreover, training for the surveyors was carried out in August 2015 before the formal survey was conducted. In order to overcome the difficulty that some Yi farmers do not speak Chinese, local youths and students who had studied Chinese were invited to act as interpreters. A total of 200 questionnaires were distributed, and 183 valid questionnaires were collected, yielding a sampling efficiency of 91.50%.
